Satin vs Fill Stitch: When to Use Each (with Simple Rules)
Satin for borders and text, fill for big areas, but the real skill is knowing where the line is. A plain-English guide to the two stitches every design is built from.
Two Stitches Build Almost Everything
Strip away the jargon and nearly every embroidery design is made from two stitch types: satin and fill (plus a running stitch for outlines and travel). Get the choice between them right and your work looks crisp and professional. Get it wrong and you get loose, snaggy borders or stiff, gappy fills.
Whether you digitize by hand or auto-digitize online, understanding these two makes you far better at spotting a good file from a bad one.
Satin Stitch: The Shiny One
A satin stitch lays parallel threads back and forth across a shape, like closely spaced zig-zags. The thread crosses the width of the shape, giving that smooth, glossy, raised look.
Use satin for:
- Lettering: the classic embroidered-text look
- Borders and outlines around shapes
- Thin columns: stems, thin logo elements, tapered shapes
- Anything narrow where you want shine and a raised edge
Satin's weakness: width. Because each stitch spans the whole shape, a wide satin column means long, loose threads that snag, sag, and pull out of shape.
The width rule: keep satin columns under about 8-10mm. Wider than that, and you should switch to fill.
Fill Stitch (Tatami): The Workhorse
A fill stitch, often called tatami, covers large areas with rows of short stitches, like mowing a lawn in overlapping passes. It's flatter and more textured than satin, and it holds large shapes flat and stable.
Use fill for:
- Large solid areas: backgrounds, big letters, filled shapes
- Anything wider than ~8-10mm
- Areas that need to lie flat without sagging
Fill's weakness: it's flatter. It doesn't have satin's shine or raised edge, so it looks less premium on small elements. That's why you don't fill small text: it loses the crisp satin edge that makes letters readable.

The pattern: narrow = satin, wide = fill. Most digitizing errors come from using satin where a shape is too wide (loose, snaggy) or filling something so small it should have been a crisp satin column (blobby text).
What "Underlay" Adds
Both satin and fill sit on top of an invisible layer called underlay: light stitches sewn first to anchor the fabric and give the top stitches something to grip. Without it, satin sinks into the fabric and fills pucker. You'll never see it in the finished piece, but it's the difference between embroidery that sits up cleanly and embroidery that looks flat and distorted. Good digitizing adds it automatically.
How to Judge a File
When you preview a design (in the digitizer's live preview or the free Embroidery Viewer), you can spot good stitch-type choices:
- Letters and thin parts should show as smooth satin columns
- Big areas should show as even fill rows, ideally following the shape's contour
- No wide satin stretched across a broad shape (that's the classic snag risk)
- Fill direction should look intentional, not random
A well-built modern digitizer applies this width rule automatically (narrow shapes become satin, wide ones fall back to a clean fill), so you get the right stitch without doing the math yourself. But knowing why it made that call is what lets you trust the file.
